Calculate cat years in human years – How to know the age of a kitten?

Convert Cat Years to Human Years

We often hear that multiplying the age of your chat by 7 to find the equivalent in human years is enough.

This is not entirely accurate because the multiplier ratio is not proportional and changes depending on the age of the cat.

The figures that we indicate below regard cats having a home because they are treated well and have a much higher chance of reaching old age than cats living outside and abandoned to themselves.

With the progress of medicine, in the course of the last thirty years, the duration of cat life expectancy has considerably increased. At present more than 20% of cats exceed 15 years of age. The world record of longevity for a cat was detained by Creme Puff a cat who died at the age of 38 years and 3 days (1).

How to know the age of a kitten?

How to know the age of a kitten

To find out the age of a kitten two possibilities are available:

1- By observing the jaw of the kitten

It is necessary to follow its dentition carefully.

You should know that, at birth, a kitten has no teeth.

The first fine sharp milk teeth start to appear only after 3 weeks.

Between 5 and 6 weeks they will have erupted, the kitten will then have 26 teeth.

He will keep this dentition up to the age of 4 months.

The upper jaw has 6 incisors, 2 canines, 6 premolars.

The lower jaw includes 6 incisors, 2 canine teeth, 4 premolars.

The definitive teeth of the kitten begin to appear after 4 to 7 months.

The kitten will then possess 30 teeth.

That is to say:

The upper jaw includes 6 incisors, 2 canines, 6 premolars, 2 molars.

The lower jaw includes 6 incisors, 2 canines, 4 premolars, 2 molars.

2- By calculating the weight of the kitten

At his birth, a kitten weighs of approximately 100 gr and gains almost 100 gr per week.

At 2 months, it should, therefore, weigh roughly between 800 and 900 gr.

The calculation of the age by the weight is an unreliable method, the weight may vary with the breed of the cat, but also with the number of kittens of the litter. The more kittens in a litter the lighter they are.
